Kwara flags off Measles Vaccination Campaign . Kicks off Routine Immunization Outreach . Kwara emerges the best implementing state in the last measles campaign - Elelu

The Kwara State Government through the Kwara State Primary Health Care Development Agency (KWSPHCDA) has flagged off the Measles Vaccination Campaign and Routine Immunization Outreach to aid prompt containment of vaccine-preventable diseases and fortify the children against communicable diseases.

The vaccination campaign is part of the proactive measures of the Kwara State Primary Health Care Development Agency (KWSPHCDA) to forestall the spread of diseases and strengthen the immunity of the children against the avoidable infections.

The Executive Secretary of Kwara State Primary Health Care Development Agency, Dr. Nusirat Elelu described measles as a highly infectious disease which causes severe illness and death in vulnerable children, stressing the need for vaccination to engender protective shield against its complications

" Measles is one of the highly infectious diseases known to man. Though vaccine-preventable, it is one of the leading causes of severe disease and death in vulnerable children, with a high tendency to spread in epidemic proportion.

" Currently, 70% of measles cases are among children under 5 years of age who missed being vaccinated in the first year of life. Available data has shown that the use of measles vaccine has resulted in over 84% reduction in measles deaths "

Elelu noted that a single dose of vaccines is not enough to attain the minimum of 95% immunity required to get the target group protected, saying that only the 85% of children who received the first dose measles vaccine would seroconvert and that which necessitated the need to revaccinate with a second dose measles vaccine to protect the rest of 15% who failed to seroconvert.

The Secretary who  appreciated the Kwara State Governor, Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRasaq for his consistent support, attributed the emergence of Kwara State as the best state among the implementing states of the last measles campaign to the unwavering interventions of the Governor which she said included the prompt payment of counterpart funds for the measles campaign.

While urging parents, caregivers and community leaders to disregard the unfounded rumors being peddled to cast aspersions the efficacy of the vaccines, Elelu announced the readiness of KWSPHCDA to implement the routine immunization outreach across the 16 LGAs, which according to her,  would be conducted concurrently with the measles vaccine to boost the immune system of the children.

On his part, the Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Taskforce on Immunization, Mr. Kayode Alabi saluted the resilience and commitment of the staff and leadership of Kwara State Primary Health Care Development Agency (KWSPHCDA) for their unrelenting efforts in making essential health services available in all nooks and crannies of the state.

" Apart from the measles being administered, I implore all mothers and caregivers to avail their children the golden opportunity of preventing untimely deaths through vaccine-preventable diseases by making them available for the routine immunization outreach also running concurrently across the state " he said

In his address, the Speaker of Kwara State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Yakubu Danladi Salihu commended the strides of the leadership of the KWSPHCDA, charging the traditional leaders to sensitize people on the importance of immunization in their respective domains to achieve a high immunization coverage.

Speaking on the various health interventions of the state government, the Honourable Commissioner for Health, Dr. Mrs. Aminat El-Imam stressed the significance of vaccination in averting avoidable diseases and implored parents and caregivers to discard the misleading information on the media space by availing their children the opportunity of the highly important intervention.
